Basics And Scoring For American Football

For nearly a century, American Football has turned out to be one of the favourite pastimes of Americans. The NFL or the National Football League is a major source for football fans across the United States and it's been so since it has merged with the American Football League or AFL in 1966. The popularity of the sport kept on growing and growing every single year. And before newcomers can start to enjoy the sport, it is necessary that they have a good understanding of the game's basic rules and how it is played.

There are 2 teams and each team is protecting one end of their field. The area is called the End Zone and it's where the team attempts to get the ball when it's in their possession. For each team, there are 11 players that are playing on the field and they're separated to Offense and Defense.

When the team is on offensive move, they're given with 4 attempts or frequently called as Downs to move the ball 10 yards per attempt. In the event that they are successful, the downs would reset to 1 and they'll attempt to move another ten yards until reaching the end zone. On the other hand, if the defense has stopped the offensive team from making the 10 yards for each attempt, they'll get the chance to be on the offense.

The offense is then allowed to run or throw the ball to move to the end zone and it's the job of the defense team to tackle the player holding the ball to the ground to step him from advancing.

Similar to every other types of sport, the main objective of the game is for the team to score as much points as they can throughout the game. There are numerous ways on how to accumulate points for Alumni Football USA and here's a quick description of each:

Touchdown

This is equivalent to 6 points and normally occurs when the player from the other team has crossed to the end zone of the opponent while holding the ball.

Field Goal

A score that's equivalent to 3 points. If the team is not able to get into the other team's end zone but close enough to kick the ball between goal posts that's positioned at the back of end zone, they might try to do so.

Extra Point

This is just 1 point and occurs after the touchdown. The scoring team can try to kick the ball between the goal posts of their opponent to generate additional point to their score.

2 Point Conversion

As what the name suggests, the scoring Alumni Football team may choose to try to get the ball once again to the end zone rather than kicking it for an extra point. If they're successful, they will be awarded with 2 more points.
